Model Rocketry
By Mohawk Design Team Designed in OnShape Information: This year the Mohawk Area High School team explored varying aspects of model rocketry design through 3D printing. Students were provided a cardboard tube, and from there, the sky was literally the limit! Each student was encouraged to first start by designing a rocket engine dummy based on the standard Estes model rocket engine offerings. This step was rudimentary in the process, as our students learned a new software this year--OnShape. The engine dummy step taught them the basics of the new software, as it was no more than straightforward cylinder with filleted edges. From there, the students designed their own nose cones, stabilizing fins, and engine mount systems, respective to the engine dummy size they chose to model at the onset of the project. We are aiming to launch a couple of our finished models by the end of this academic year, or the beginning of next year, and hope to continue on with this project into the next school year by scaling the rocket size up and examining engine clusters. |
